Dia De Los Muertos!

our ofrenda.

Let’s Celebrate! Dia De Los Muertos is such a great Holiday in Mexican Culture that can be used in every family. It’s a celebration a sort of reunion where the guest of honor is our relatives who have passed on. This holiday was something I heard of but didn’t study nor really understand until a certain Disney Movie came out and BOOM! After my grandfather passed away we talk about him with the girls because they always bring him up in conversation. And I love that they keep his memory alive. Once this movie came out my girls really wanted to connect and “grow up to be Mexican” It’s then we did the girls DNA and they were just about 18% each but to them it was the most amazing discovery because they felt connected to the movie and felt it was important we uphold this Holiday.

The girls and I bought some marigolds from Home Depot, made some Paper Marigolds, Papel Picado for our little ofrenda. The girls wanted me to make pan dulce because its what my grandpa liked to eat. Next year we will make Pan De Muerto, (well I will make it.) The girls took their favorite photo my Papa Nando and set it on the table. We also made sure to eat tamales yesterday because its something my grandpa enjoyed. These little traditions are great because not only do we learn about our culture but we get to talk about good memories and the girls feel connected. Kennedy and Skye decided to put on their Mexican dresses (a customer turned friend was able to get my girls these beautiful dresses from mexico) and dance in the house to music my grandpa enjoyed singing. I’m so lucky to call these girls mine and thankful for them and inspiring a world of education.

Luckily as the years have gone by we are more and more aware and try to do things that help prep and celebrate our loved ones. This year I had plans for months and weeks to put something together and share and well here I am last minute. But hey doesn’t mean you can’t still celebrate! I made a Dia De Los Muertos Guide (listed below); a short little fact sheet and coloring sheet you can print for your kids.

If you print and use it be sure to tag me @homeschoolingmoonchildren I would love to share your kids work! Or just even what you did to remember your loved ones who have passed on.
