Creating a Personal Book Journal for Kids | Encourage Reading and Documentation

As a child of the 90’s I want to instill the power of “writing it all down”! If youre old enough like me do you remember the joys of a new a Journal? Stickers? Pens? Highlighters? We wrote every little thing down and even documented the things and books we wanted to.

A few years ago I made a “Nature Journal” because nature is a huge part of our daily lives and homeschooling. But that’s a topic for another day. So as my girls started to get more and more into reading, I wanted them to document the books. I told them as a child I would go online and find the books I wanted or would go to the library to find books and search. They thought it was so cool that we didn’t have the internet on phones yet. Sometimes I stop and realize my girls will never know what it was like with dial up and dsl. But they now understand the ease of opening any device or phone and connecting to find the info they need. But sure that’s great and important but I want them to document it and not just like on a piece of paper but like a journal or book.

So this is how the idea of a “Book Journal” came to be for my girls. If you are on booktok or bookstagram many adults do it but it’s important to implement these habits in kids. It was from this idea I decided to make this journal and make it so my girls feel inspired to document their book journey and keep it all in one place. The link above will take you to the amazon list of everything I used to make these journals!

Trust the Process, something I told myself over and over. I went ahead and opened up Canva and used it to design book journal papers. I mean I wish it was that easy but I was in over my head trying to make this my vision. I wanted TBR (to be read) Lists, DNF (did not finish) List, I wanted book reviews, and Bookstie Reads. I mean you need a list for the “Book Recommendations” . I didn’t want a huge binder size and was tempted to go for the A5 (5.8×8.27) but it just felt too big. So I decided on a Personal Size (3.7 x 6.7) would be the perfect size. I found a A6 – 6 Ring Binder and decided this was the perfect thing for the girls! Had slots for multiple library cards, slots for gift cards and such. I then added A6 Binder Pockets to be used for library receipts, or bookstore receipts and a place to hold their annotation tabs.
So ready for the list of pages I made… I made various sheets but all have a purpose!

As you can see I have made this an endless journey which has sparked an interest in not only reading books but collecting! As you know I got the girls a sprocket for the End of The Year Baskets, which has been the key to fill in the “Bookshelf” pages! As to how I format that I made that also in Canva and go to Amazon to screenshot the books and add to the Canva sheet and print on the sprocket. It’s a lot of steps but the conversation the girls and I have is the most enjoyable. This journal is not limited to middle readers or even just chapter books! It’s great to add our favorite picture books!!

  1. I love this idea so much! My 10 year old is so into recording things she’s into and this is perfect. She’s been reading the doll people series and Pheobe and her unicorn comics.
