It’s September 16, 2024 which means Mexican Independence Day! (But from September 15 to October 15 its National Hispanic Heritage Month.) Today is no different as we dive deep into the significance of Sept 16Th. Today brings not only us with Mexican roots together. But Mexicans all over the world stand united in the Independence Mexico gained from Spain!
One day we will visit Mexico with the girls to embrace where some of our family came from. But today here in California we will partake in ways that make us feel culturally connected. I strive to make small things relevant to not only my girls but your kids at home too. I hope this Mini Guide is filled with more handcrafts and handwork than recipes and text. I hope it inspires you to go enrich yourselves in the Mexican culture!
As you have seen on Instagram, I shared I made 2 recipes. One being the pan dulce (sweet bread) better known as Concha! Did you know Concha is “shell” in Spanish. And its why this little bread looks like a shell. I need to tweak a few things before I share that. But when I do, I will add it to this post! So be sure to sign up for notifications below as I will update via email!
BUT for the bread I did make! I made these Mexican Dinner Rolls called “Bolillos” This was a little bread my Papa always had and enjoyed. So I learned how to make it. I also changed the recipes I found to adjust to my taste. It’s literally a bread recipe that can be made daily if you wish!

As for handwork + handcrafts I am sharing how to make Ojo de Dios, Simple Marigold, and Mini Papel Picado. Some things that are fairly simple to make or quick trip to a fabric store or my Amazon Store. Everything is really easy to do. If you need any help feel free to send me an email or dm. I will help you!

These crafts are simple and a great way to get some handwork rhythm into your lives. I will say this once your kids learn to make marigolds your house will be covered in them! You can make seasonal ones in various colors to correspond with holidays. As for the Ojo de Dios I love to make these during summer as we collect many many sticks. So pull out those summer sticks and make some. If you don’t have any Popsicle sticks will suffice. Or rather take a walk in nature and collect sticks together. It’s a great way to get outdoors, find peace in your walk.
Okay enough talking I know what you are here for… Download the guide below and tag me in your handwork/handcrafts!!
I would love to see what you make! If you do make something comment below and let me know what other handwork you would like to see.
xx,
Rosemary
